Asia’s vexed relationship with its traditional arts can be seen in the way these forms are positioned at the core and fringes of SIFA, depending on how much artists translate them for the global language of contemporary performing arts. Tradition exerts a complex power over many of these artists, often inspiring rich creative experiments even as it demands conformity to long-established norms. Decades into our post-colonial existence, where do we stand in terms of how we relate to our traditional art forms?
In this conversation, we explore this question through the evolution of The TENG Company from Singapore, and Cambodian Living Arts (CLA). At various times in these companies’ histories, tradition has been a technique that needs to be mastered; a legacy that demands protection; a documentation of tireless innovation; and the necessary foundation for a future that is still being written. Join TENG’S Samuel Wong and CLA’s Yon Sokhorn as they share their unique perspectives on the role of tradition in Asian contemporary performing arts.
